Where to Put Your CCTV Cameras?

CCTV as most of us know stands for closed circuit television, this means a closed circuit within the building or property that films what's going on within that area. This is the purpose of CCTV and it allows a business to avoid various crimes from being committed against them and means that they know what's going on in all parts of their store all the time. Of course this is the purpose but depending on how well the set up is handled it isn't always realised. The thing is that if the cameras don't cover all of the area they're filming in then you won't necessarily see everything that's going on – but there's much more to it than that.

Firstly then the cameras must between them cover as much area of your premises as possible and you want to do this using as few cameras as possible. This is important for analogue as you can only record from one camera at a time, and for digital as it can get expensive to use multiple cameras. This makes an obvious position for your cameras the corners of rooms as this gives them a view of most of the room. Putting them high up will also give you something of a birds eye view. Here though the problem is that the other side of the room may be too far away to see clearly (and particularly if the camera is set high up) and that any obstacles such as shelves could easily block certain areas. As such then at least two cameras in each room like this will be necessary when the rooms are large and have large objects in them.

Another consideration is that you should also have CCTV outside your property which will give you advanced warning of people trying to break in, or will allow you to catch them leaving where they might drop their guard. Again here you should also keep the CCTV high up, mostly in order to protect the cameras themselves and prevent a potential criminal from simply vandalising them, steeling them or covering them over.

Finally you need to decide whether you want your CCTV to be clearly on display or mostly hidden. By keeping it in obvious places you will be able to hopefully deter criminal activity as they realise they can get caught, however by hiding the cameras they are less likely to be tampered with and you are more likely to spot unwanted activities in action which can be useful for a court case theoretically. Here an obvious solution is again to have more than one camera and to keep one hidden and one well on display.

With this set up – cameras in high corners of rooms, two for large rooms, some hidden and some on view, and at leas some cameras for outside – you should then be able to get the best view of your property and prevent and catch crime most efficiently. Of course this might vary depending on the property, and you shouldn't be afraid to experiment with various layouts.
